Prior safari travelers- need some advice. How much cash do we bring for tipping, laundry etc? Is it safe to leave our passports in our rooms or do we have to have them on us at all times? Do they have hair dryers in room at the lodges?
@Kcedwards I have been to Africa five times and have only had one encounter with the tze tze flies. That was August in Tanzania, and it was no big deal. I do, however, recommend taking the proper meds particular to your tour prescribed by a travel doctor. There are wiser and more experienced members of this forum who may have a different response.
@MauraClow I take enough cash for the TD’s tip plus some smaller bills for extra tips when the service deserves it. I have had success using ATMs in larger cities to procure local currency which I use for purchases. To the best of my knowledge, there are hairdryers everywhere except for Camp Kalahari in Botswana. I always locked my passport in the safe provided in my room/tent, and it was never an issue. Carrying it on your person is, in my opinion, dangerous.
Just back from Tanzania on the Bridges July 14 Tour and the Tse Tse flies were really bad in the late afternoons in the Serengeti. We went in a 4 PM drive and they were swarming all over us as we were driving away from the Melia.
