What to do in Hanoi

We are arriving in Hanoi early and we were curious if anyone has suggestions for things to do that are not included in the Tauck city tour. We had to cancel a day to HaLong Bay because of back issues. We have an evening food tour scheduled but so far that is all we have on the agenda. Any ot the markets that are recommended, Is the train street worthwhile? . We would hire a guide but have had no luck so far. Thanks for the help

Contact the concierge at the Metropole and explain what you want to do. They will definitely help you. The Tauck city tour doesn't show you a whole lot.

  • The walk to and around the lake through the old city is nice. Be advised that Hanoi is the least pedestrian-friendly city I've ever been to, as sidewalks are used for scooter and motorcycle parking, but it still can be done.

  • If you are wide awake from jet lag in the wee hours of the morning, get dressed and go for a walk. It's amazing what is happening between 3-6am. We were totally unaware so I am not going to spoil the surprises for you. Just do it!

  • I loved the pool at the Metropole. Ask the concierge about going to the Water Puppet Show. It was a real cultural experience. I also rented a pedicab and had him take me to specific temples I had researched. It was a lot of fun. Hanoi is a really interesting city.

  • We saw the Water puppet show as part of the Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos tour, it is quite unique.

  • Tauck took us to the water puppet show as part of the tour.

  • I did Vietnam independently. I was not on a Tauck tour so don’t listen to me 🤣
