Trains in Japan
I have 2 questions! For the train trips with Tauck on the trip, do you have 'reserved' seats?
For local travel in Tokyo on trains (or Metro), is it best to buy tickets ahead (or a pass if possible) or just buy them ready to go somewhere! The suggestion says it is easy to get around, but it looks so foreign to me!
Any information is helpful!!

For Tauck train trips, yes, you have reserved seats. The tour director will distribute your seat assignment shortly before boarding the train.
I cannot comment on independent train travel because I walked everywhere in the city and did not go far enough where a train ride was warranted.
No need to buy tix in advance. For the Tokyo Metro, kiosks (or agents) available. Kiosks offer English.
It's quite easy to buy metro tickets there. I'm not sure if Tauck still uses the Mandarin Oriental but it had an ideal metro stop because it was so easy to use. After a lot of walking the first day we used Tokyo Station's metro to get back to our hotel. It is huge; we felt like we walked miles underneath to get to the tram. After that, before and after our Tauck tour, I made sure that transfers were at the smaller metro stations. That worked much better.
