yellow fever vaccination

Are you required to get a yellow fever vaccine if you are 64 years old?

Comments

  • You are not required to have any vaccine, but it is recommended and you may be asked to show your yellow fever certificate especially if there is an outbreak. Consult with your doctor who knows your health history.
Tongue in cheek…mosquitoes don’t usually ask your age before they bite you.

  • I thought I read that if you are traveling between Kenya and Tanzania that you are required to have the vaccine or a waiver? I am also 64 years old with an autoimmune issue and have been "waivering" (pun intended!) on this one. My internist said I should get it.

  • You need either the yellow card or an authorized letter from your doctor. Don’t put your tour director in the odd spot to try and “convince” the Kenyan border police to allow you to enter. We were there last September. You want to make the crossing from Tanzania to Kenya as quickly and easily as possible. As many others have mentioned, follow your doctor’s recommendations on all vaccines and other shots when going to Africa. I was 68, my wife 69. No effects from YF vaccine, but we don’t usually have any side effects besides the sore arm.

  • Yellow Fever vaccine has more side effects in people with compromised immunity ; this could be the result of taking meds that lower immunity.Age is an arbitrary cut off.If you are healthy otherwise,it is fairly well tolerated.Me and my husband are in the mid seventies; we took it with no adverse effects. My husband is taking an immunosuppressant; our PCP recommended not taking the meds for a couple of weeks starting the day of vaccination. As retired medical professionals we prefer to take any precaution that is recommended!

  • For U.S. citizens with Medicare Advantage check your plans. The Yellow Fever vaccine is $0 copay for mine.

  • If you're under 65, it's available at Costco for a reduced rate, but must be ordered by your doctor.

  • I just can’t believe the continuing discussions about this issue. One thing to remember is that Tauck clearly say they take no responsibility if you do not have the correct paperwork to enter a country which may include the yellow fever vaccination card. The tour director has to think about the greater group. This situation is obviously different if someone has an accident or falls ill, in which case they are there to facilitate finding a doctor and so on. But at the border, they are going to be going through throughout the season and need to maintain good relationships with the border control agents, most who take their job seriously or may not be in a good mood, especially with a wealthy group of Americans.

Tauck have really really increased the info about vaccinations in the important info here
However, as far as I understood it, even that info is a little incorrect.. if you have had a yellow fever vaccine in the past, whenever it was given it is valid for life. The change came yes in 2017 when research suggested that one vaccine protected you for life, you don’t require another vaccine if you got one before then, the vaccine component hasn’t changed, the researchers found that no one appeared to get yellow fever after they had a vaccine. Our yellow fever vaccines were given before 2017. Also, Tauck are covering their own backs to say yellow fever is not required after age 65, some, only some research says there could be a bigger risk, but it is very small and it still might mean you may not be allowed to enter a country especially if there is a yellow fever outbreak
Here is an except from Tauck, which obvious many people fail to read and rely on unqualified strangers here on the forum. I do have a healthcare background, but you can only take my word for it.

    Regarding the Yellow Fever Vaccination:

While not a Tauck requirement, guests are advised to bring proof of Yellow Fever Vaccination or a doctor's note stating why they are unable to get the Yellow Fever vaccination for entry into Kenya. Please be advised this regulation often changes.

Please consult with your personal physician about receiving a Yellow Fever vaccination. Please Note: Vaccinations are not required for travelers age 65 and older, or for other individuals with certain medical conditions. Guests who receive the yellow fever immunization should bring proof of vaccination (obtainable from your physician) on tour. Guests who do not receive the vaccination (whether due to age or another reason) should bring a note from their physician explaining why the vaccine was not administered. Vaccinations received before 2017 are valid for 10 years. Vaccinations received after 2017 are valid for life, regardless of age.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here. You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site. It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective. Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided
