Switzerland: Europe's Crown Jewel

I’m very interested in this trip, but I’m a bit concerned about the elevation. I do well up to about 7,000 feet, but I noticed on the map that the maximum elevation listed is 11,333 feet. Are we at that elevation for an extended period of time?
I plan to call Tauck as well, but I’d really appreciate hearing from people who’ve taken this trip and can share their experience.
Thank you in advance,
Marilyn

  • We took that trip - no problem with the elevation. You're not at that high elevation for long.

You can see what we did at the Jungfraujoch and how long we were there at https://www.mikeandjudytravel.com/2023-2Switzerland-03.htm#Jungfraujoch

Watch out for the slipery footing in the Ice Palace. https://www.mikeandjudytravel.com/2023-2Switzerland-03.htm#IcePalace

  • The ascent to Jungfraujoch is slow and steady. Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol is important. Confer with your physician if you have concerns.

The Ice Palace is not a concern, especially if you have appropriate footwear with sturdy soles.

  • If you look back at posts on this tour, many people have no issues with the ice palace. It makes sense, if they did, Tauck would probably skip it, they don’t want lots of injured people.

  • I went back to my notes from the tour.

Gornergrat is about 10,000 ft. Train up takes 33 minutes and you can take the train back down to Zermatt when you want or take the partial hike down which is very easy (I did it 4 mths after knee replacement).

Jungfraujoch - we left the hotel by coach at 8 and were back by 2:30 or 3. Transport up and back took about 3-4 hours in total. You go by different methods so there is some wait time between each. So up top about 3-4 hours. We had time to walk around the outdoor deck. Walk out onto the snow. And then the time in the ice palace which included snacks and drinks. You are basically walking on ice thru hallways with ice displays. I wore lightweight hiking boots which were good when I went out onto the snow which was slushy that day. If not for that just shoes or sneakers with good traction are fine.

  • Thanks for the information! I appreciate it very much.
