Adaptors for this trip

Is there someone out there that has been on this trip recently and can just give me the adaptor letters I need to bring? Some of the messages are getting confusing, but I did understand the one that simply said "my head hurts" :)

  • Mine doesn't have a letter designation, but it is the one that is marked U.K. Africa on the box. It is a 3 prong (no round posts). The only information on it is 13 over 250 with a line instead of the word over.
  • One of our other Forum readers sent me an email on virtually the same subject. My answer...

Kenya and Tanzania use two adapters: the "D" and the "G". I don't remember which hotels require which adapter. If the only electronics you are taking are cell phone, camera battery charger and, possibly, a lap top computer, the adapter will be all you will require to re-charge or use these items in both countries. These items are made to operate equally well on both U.S. (110/120 volts) or International (220 to 240 volts) so no voltage converter is required.

Items like hair dryers, curling irons and other small appliances will most likely require both a converter (to change 220/240 to our 110/120) and an adapter. However, such appliances are available at the Tauck hotels so it makes no sense to take your own.

You can find the adapters you need locally at a Radio Shack or Best Buy. They are not expensive. You can also order them on-line from Amazon.

I have never found a need to take more than one of each type of adapter but I have heard of adapters breaking. However, I took my first Tauck safari with only one battery for my Cannon camera. Never again! Beth and I both take three camera batteries each on every safari. All three are with us - fully charged - every day. Never going to lose another picture to a dead battery.

  • Leo,
Thanks for the first-hand info, and I'm glad you posted it on the forum so we would all have a "powerful" trip experience :)
It was also nice of you to post your e-mail address (pages ago) to help everyone out, and again, thanks for your great blog.

  • Thanks to Leo for finally answering this, I know you have been on several safaris so can be relied upon for knowing what is what. I have been to Kenya and Tanzania but could not for sure remember because I always rely on my hubby for that stuff, I just make sure he has clean clothes to pack. I keep posting that people are likely to encounter two different types of plug but I guess some are just not taking my word for it, because it seems such an odd thing, but we are talking about Africa.
We leave for Tanzania on Wednesday and hoping for another magical time in Africa to celebrate our 40th anniversary.
  • One suggestion I might make ~ bring something that will allow you to plug in more than one thing from one outlet. I found a couple places where outlets were at a premium.

We leave SFO on Thursday, arriving Arusha Friday night. Maybe we will see you at the hotel on Saturday. Mike and Eloise.
  • Hi Sealord, we will look out for you-- the annoying couple with the British accents, not posting any more details!
If you can persuade my husband to take me back to Galapagos that would be good too!

When were you last in the Galapagos?
