Shorts do work for this trip, but there may be tsetse flies during the day and they hurt even when they bite you through clothing. We encountered them this past trip to Tanzania but not on our other trip to East Africa. Early morning and at dusk and beyond you will need mosquito repellant on exposed skin. Sunscreen too. After my first trip to Africa I dispensed with shorts and the past two trips just use cotton long pants or safari type fabric, just easier and no need to change to long pants after dark.
I did bring a pair of lightweight golf shorts but I worried about sunburned knees (even with sunscreen) while riding in the vehicles while the tops were open/off. Flies were not a problem in October when we were there, but the shorts left more exposed skin to get dusty. Pants just worked better, as long as they were lightweight-type fabric.
