Clothes for Kenya & Tanzania

I am busy shopping for suitable clothing for my upcoming safari. I know only beige, khaki and olive, but are any other colors that can be worn ? I live in Florida --- do I need to buy a new rain coat and warm jacket in those colors ? What is worn in the evenings for dinner ? Thanks for any assistance.

Those colors will help you blend in nicely with the other tourist on safari, but frankly, other than blue (yes, denim) and black which reportedly attract tsetse flies, any color is fine. You'll hear red is not good because it scares the animals- they'll think you are Masaii who wear reds/oranges and are hunting. Frankly I think that attributes too much intelligence to the animals and is bunk.

Socks- the soil is reddish brown and it can be dusty, so you might want to avoid white socks. You rarely if ever leave or even allowed to leave your safari vehicle, so it is up to you about the socks.

Dress for comfort and protection- we wore Colombia PFG or similar clothes- long sleeve shirts for protection from the sun and skeeters. The shirt backs are vented, they are light weight, dry quickly, and have tie-up/roll-up sleeves. I wore pants that have have zip-off lower legs but didn't use that option much, my wife wore a pair of those, but mostly capris. A Safari vest, again if you need tons of pockets and want to look like a tourist on safari or a fleece vest for cold mornings, especially the zero dark thirty wake-up for the balloon ride. We didn't have a drop of rain the whole trip (13 June 2014)
  • I went same time last year. I purchased the colored clothing you did. I also wore white cotton which did get dirty but was easy to clean via hotel laundry and seemed to repel everything including sun. We never had any rain. I took a poncho and umbrella and never used. Plus I would imagine ponchos may be supplied by the hotel you are staying at if rain is more than a mild shower and you are going to be out in the elements other than a safari jeep. Enjoy this most wonderful trip--it is the best!
