What are the best touring sandals?

Does anybody have suggestions on the type of sandals to buy? We're looking for good support and comfort.
Thanks

  • That's such a subjective issue. Depends on your feet, legs, back etc. My current favorite sandals are Vionics but I have plantar fasciitis and tend to pronate which they correct. There's lots of other good brands - Merrells, Cobb Hill, Clarks, Teva, Earth, Naot, Keen, etc etc.

For each tour Tauck has a link to "necessary gear" that has some recommended shoes/sandals.

Also, check the brands offered on websites like REI, Footsmart, Travelsmith. Plan on spending $$$. If you can't find a store in your area that carry the brands you're interested in and need to order on line, pick a retailer that has free shipping/returns. Can get pretty expensive otherwise.

A little tip. If you have small feet like me, 71/2, you can buy children's or youth size sandals. I have Keens in a couple of colors, they were $49 instead of $90 at my local Stride Rite store. I also wear similar Clarks. The type I refer to are the covered toe style. I find them very comfortable with or without socks. I don't have any kind of shoe with proper full ankle support for my travels and I don't think I have ever seen anyone in such a shoe on any of my more exotic Tauck tours, like Galapagos or Safaris. For a full cover shoe, I wear Merrell or similar suede waterproof, that you can also get in children sizes.
  • I love my Naots!
