Did you go to the Isle of Skye?

Thinking of doing the Week in Scotland trip. I know people out there have added on the Isle of Skye on their own, and I'm wondering if you thought it was worth it? Was it different enough from other parts of the Tauck tour? Did you do a small group or a private tour? It's a long drive to get there from Glasgow or Edinburgh.
thanks.

  • It’s about almost 50 years since I was there camping, I just remember being eaten alive by midges.

  • I wrote a longish review of this tour from Jun 2023 (https://forums.tauck.com/discussion/17016/trip-review-11-18-jun-2023#latest). Instead of the Isle of Skye we took the train from Edinburgh to Oban and thought it was pretty easy to get to by train and worth the effort. Details are in my review.

  • Thanks for pointing me to your helpful review, Claudia!
Hopefully, those who have been to Skye can comment on the scenery. I had read about the midges and am aware.

  • Wan, I really wish Tauck had a longer land tour of Scotland that included the islands. I believe the main issue is lack of Tauck quality hotels.

Sorry I have no memory of the scenery. I went to the isle of Orkney more recently and there is lots to see there, including Skara Brae, burial mounds, a church built by Italians during the Second World War, a lovely Cathedral and the jewelry artist Sheila Fleet. I guess you can google all these.
Just found these on the web, also reminded me there is a fantastic stone circle

The must-see attractions in Orkney are:
    Ring of Brodgar
    St Magnus Cathedral
    Italian Chapel, Orkney
    Churchill Barriers
    Standing Stones of Stenness

Hope this is a more helpful idea of an alternative

We did the Tauck week in Scotland as well as the cruise. Before the land tour we rented a car and drove from Inverness to Ullapool, where we caught the New Caledonian Ferry to Stornaway, and visited The Outer Hebrides Island of Lewis and Harris. We then took another ferry to Skye , took the bridge and visited Oban. Each place was unique and beautiful. Lewis has the black houses and the standing stones as well as really beautiful rugged beach scenery . Skye has a very rugged shoreline and craggy peaks ( Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, and. Ullin Hills) . We found our independent adventure to be a highlight of the trip. Oban is a lovely port town. The weather was mixed - it rained sideways Oban. The pubs in these locations had great food and live music. We were treated to a spontaneous bagpipe concert in the street in Skye . It was magical. So , Wan - definitely worth it. We did it in 4 days.
