Interesting article, thanks!
Thanks British, this is really an interesting article, and reminded me of something I have been thinking about from another thread discussing Tauck's plan to introduce new travel "products". I am the kind of person who almost always adds on days before and after a Tauck tour, especially in Europe. I spend a lot of time scrambling for reasonable -cost and convenient transportation, especially for exactly the kinds of places mentioned in the article. There are so many places in Italy I would love to visit, but not wishing to drive, how am I going to get there?. Tauck has always avoided "add ons" but maybe it is time to reconsider. The option to extend some of their regular tours to include some of these off- the- beaten path areas would be an example. Keep the groups very small and avoid luxury excess. I would vote for that.
Wan, when there was a forum talk with Jennifer Tambaugh, I asked about longer tours and they said no, instead they recognized back to back tours. I do have friend who hired a driver to take them around Italy a few years ago. I can’t believe it was expensive became they would never pay Tauck to our prices. I think if you pose a question here there will be people who give you leads.
Wan raises a good point. An example is a pre-tour visit to Ha Long Bay for the Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand tour. Based on comments on this forum, there's a lot of interest in visiting Ha Long Bay and each traveler has to make their own arrangements.
Like I’ve said before, our Tauck tour included Halong Bay, so it can be done.
I usually an extra week or so onto most trips - always arriving early but sometimes staying extra time at the last stop or flying somewhere else. I always hire guides and sign up for interesting tours. I have my days planned out. After Japan, I went to Thailand (Chang Mai and Bangkok). After K&T, I went to Capetown. Before India, I went Singapore. It is fun to plan and it has been a great way for me to see the world: within the cocoon of Tauck and then without!
