When to book airfare for July 2026 Great Migration Trip?

Hello, I’m new to Tauck and have booked the Great Migration trip for July 2026. I’d love some advice on two questions.
1. Airfare timing: How far in advance do you recommend booking flights for this trip? Since July is a peak time for East Africa, should I purchase tickets as soon as they’re released (around September 2025)? I’ve already narrowed down my preferred airline (Delta/KLM), route, and class, but I also plan to check with Tauck Air to see if they can offer competitive rates.
2. Arrival at JRO: The tour officially begins on a Thursday, but it looks like the only scheduled activity that day is dinner. I plan depart the U.S. West Coast on Monday and, if all goes smoothly, arrive at JRO Tuesday evening. I’m thinking that will give me some cushion for jet lag and potential flight delays. Does that sound reasonable?
Thanks in advance!

You'll get differing opinions, and a lot depends on class of flight. We fly business class and have never seen business class prices go down as time goes on, so we book at the first opportunity, which for many airlines, like Delta which we often use, is around 330 days prior to flight (remember, if you are booking a round trip, earliest booking is 330 days prior to your return flight.)

As you can imagine, one of the hazards of booking early is flight changes. Also, don't forget non-us airlines and alternate US gateway airports. We flew Ethiopian to K&T. Unless Tauck has a really special deal, you can usually get a better fare and more desirable routing if you book directly with the airlines.

It is always a good idea to go a day or more early. There are pre-tour activities to do in Arusha. A recent forum thread discussed this topic. https://forums.tauck.com/discussion/19053/arusha-national-park-day-tour-recent-experiences#latest

A few years ago, due to weather and flight delays we arrived in Athens two days later than scheduled, just in time for the welcome dinner. :o Unfortunately, we missed some planned pre-tour activities.

  • I agree with all Alan has said. We’ve taken four tours that begin in Arusha staring as long ago as 2007. Being fairly new at that time, we let Tauck book our flights. They have contracts with Delta and had us going from Philly to Detroit, Detroit to Amsterdam and Amsterdam to Arusha JRO. We did not do our research so didn’t check that we could have flown directly to Amsterdam from Philly. After that trip, we were annoyed. The next time we booked ourselves and took the better route for us. Then we discovered Qatar air and since then we go to Africa and some other places on that airline. The flights go to Doha and then you get a flight to your final destination. It’s now our favorite airline, and since we can now afford Business class, we love it. We can eat dinner or any meal whatever time we choose, My favorite dinner so far was a lobster thermidor. We can change into provided pajamas. We leave those for the locals as the top makes a good sweatshirt. We love that the flight attendants call us by Mr and Mrs ….we feel special. For us, the Delta route is history. Ethiopia don’t fly from Philly so we have not considered that.

  • I too agree with SeaLord. Great Migration is shorter and way more expensive. You see the same animals and sometimes run into a migration anyway on any of the other tours that go to Tanzania. I mean, how many wildebeest and zebra do you need to see,

  • I agree with AlanS and British. We also book our flights as soon as they come available. Only once did we wait on booking (Japan trip) and we paid about $1000 more then if we booked early. But like British, Qatar is our choice of airline with one stop in Doha and then on to the final destination. They have amazing lounges, food, sleep areas and showers! It's great to be able to clean up and feel refreshed for that second flight. And lobster thermidor on the flight, who can pass that up? We also lie to arrive at least a day early in case of delays and to rest. Hope this helps!

  • I'm going on the Tanzania: Serengeti to Zanzibar trip in July 2026 and my flights should open in a couple of weeks. I have a couple of questions.

Which layover would you choose in Amsterdam if flying Delta - 2hr20min or 4hr25min?

Also, for the flight home, the Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro and the Kilimanjaro to Paris flight have the same flight number, but the seat maps are different. I was told the same flight number means we stay on the plane so we don't have to worry about a short connection to make another flight. Is that true?

    Thanks!!

  • I would choose the longer layover in Amsterdam.

  • Two hours is an easily doable connection at Amsterdam. That said, I might opt for the longer connection on the way to Africa to make it more likely you will arrive for the start of the tour.

The Air France flight is a single airplane that flies a circuit from Paris to Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro to Paris. You won’t have to get off the plane at JRO on your way to Paris.

Definitely the longer layover in Amsterdam, it gives them plenty of time to get your checked luggage on the plane especially if your plane arrives late into Amsterdam. I have mentioned previously that that flight has a reputation for delayed luggage.
Kathy, what is your hometown? Has that influenced your choice of Delta?

  • I am another one who books as soon as the flights become available. Typically 330 days out from the return flight date. On the two times I have been to Africa I have used Qatar through Doha. They are top notch and I wouldnt chose another airline if Qatar had an offering on that route. If you do chose to go through Doha and have a long layover like I did, look at the Oryx hotel inside airport security. You can get a sleep in a real bed and shower before you take off on the next leg and you dont have to leave the airport and come back in through security again. Worth the $$ for me anyway ($300 in Sept 2024)

  • Thank you all so much for this excellent advice, much appreciated!

  • Thanks everyone, too!!

British - I’m out of Boston and will look at Qatar, but the 9 hour layover by myself is not attractive to me.

Also, I would love to fly Business r/t, but it looks like I may do Premium over and Business back, at least on Delta, because of price. I’d have to price out Qatar when their dates are released to compare, but I’m sure they’ll be up there like Delta.

  • I heard Qatar is better in Economy than other airlines. We could only afford to put our family in Economy whilst we were in Business last year on the family safari. They were ok apart from the return flight when a sort of deranged passenger would not stay seated and at one point sat on my son’s knee until being removed! Doha airport is amazing, you might want to check if you could pay to go into the Business class lounge where you can shower or even sleep in one of the many secluded corners or pay for a few hours in the Oryx hotel, of which there are two. We used the hotel one time, first walking to the wrong one. I can’t recall how much we paid. I’m thinking it may not have been as expensive as rWilson paid. Maybe you could look into it if you think Qatar may be an option for you. It would certainly be cheaper than business class.

  • Thanks! I definitely will look at both options.
