Activity and Pace level

My husband and I are thinking of the Patagonia journey in Dec. 2026. We are seniors but relatively active. Why is the pace level a 4? Is it the long days? I’m a little concerned about the boat rides, I’m prone to motion sickness. I’m hoping since I don’t plan on ever doing Drakes passage to Antartica, Patagonia will be just as amazing. Any input on the journey would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • We went to Patagonia with Tauck in 2018, there are hikes and very long days….partly because melas start very late, maybe eating until 10pm at some hotels. On some days, the wind was so fierce you could barely stand. Here is a photo of us in a windy place after a hike to one of the glaciers. You can see we needed lots of layers, like three on our legs for warmth.

At the Perito Moreno glacier there is a broadwalk with hundreds of steps.

We enjoyed Patagonia so much that we went back this past January on a more extensive tour and more hiking. We were 71 and 72 of average fitness. I’ll try to post more photos.
We don’t plan to visit Antarctica, we saw penguins, seals, guanocos etc in Patagonia.

You can see part of the steps at the glacier on the very left of the photo below

In the photo above…This past January we hiked by a lake which had a stony trail near a glacier, we started to cross a sort of stony sand bar and I could barely stand in the wind…a few of us turned back and had hot chocolate. Also, we love Buenos Aires.

  • I took this tour in February 2024 in my mid-70s. Nothing struck me as physically strenuous, but the days are long and full.

  • You can get a feel for the pace of the tour by reviewing past posts on the Patagonia forum.

My husband and I took the tour in February/March of this year and loved it. The 4 rating for pace is fair. Long days sightseeing and traveling and opportunities for optional long and more difficult hikes. I think that the dinners are offered earlier than in the past. The only long evening that I recall is the farewell dinner and tango show, which was very good.

Fortunately for us, we did not encounter the famous winds. The boat rides, therefore, were very smooth. I think that I recall someone posting that one of their boat tours was cancelled because of weather.

  • We are scheduled to take the Patagonia tour in December 2026 and extend it with a visit to Iguazu Falls. We will both be 75 and are currently physically active and healthy. We are looking forward to it, and with all of the good information posted here, we will be well prepared.

  • I’m trying to clear photos and just came across this photo at the Grey Lake in Patagonia 2018.. windy!

  • British - Is that one of the rare Patagonian Penguins? 😁

  • Yea! New species.. puffed up with a blowing gale.
