That's a tough question. They were both great tours, but very different.
If you don't like hot, humid weather, choose Japan.
If you prefer a first world, civilized country, choose Japan.
If you prefer a more diverse experience, choose VCT.
If you go all the places we went to in Japan, it is just as diverse. Naked bathing, staying in a monastery with monks, The bullet train, incredible food, snow monkeys, putting gold leaf on your own lacquer plate…..time to go again….

I believe you get much greater diversity with the VCT tour - from means of travel, to sights you see, etc.
