Medical Insurance

I have a friend who is traveling to Europe for his daughter's wedding and then some general travel. He asked about medical insurance. I know that some of you have purchased from some outside companies. I'd appreciate it if you would share with me the names of companies that you think are good.

Thank you.

  • We use the website Squaremouth which has many options and levels depending on your needs

KathyM - is he on traditional Medicare (parts A and B ) Ifo so, a number of the Medigap plans (C, D, F, G, M, and N) cover 80% of expenses up to $50K. If he has commercial insurance or a Medicare (dis)Advantage plan (part C), he'll have to check his policy. The premium credit cards also have some medical coverage, as long as travel was charged to the card. That's what I've done for travel, though I've never needed to use it.

  • In general, Medicare does not cover medical expenses in Europe. If you have to pay in Europe getting money back can be a hassle.

  • I use Travel Insured International for travel medical. I found them through the USAA website. I've used them for many years and have had two claims that were handled without problems.

  • Thank you all for your feedback.. I'll pass this on.

  • I've used Allianz and had to file a claim. It was an easy process and they paid quickly

  • Tauck coverage us the most economical for folks in their 60s and older since it is not age rated.

  • The original post was asking for so,women who was not going on a Tauck trip. But I do agree with you on Tauck tours it is the best.

  • I'll second itskr with Allianz. I have their annual plan that includes medical and other coverages. They also have single trip plans. I only had one rental car damage claim with them over the years and they paid quickly and without questions.

  • For just medical look at Geoblue

  • We had not filed for medical needs, but we also use Allianz for trip insurance (and maybe trip insurance has value while traveling to daughter's wedding)

  • We use the Tauck insurance when traveling with them. However, last year we were with another company and self-insured with AIG. My husband ended up in a hospital in Antwerp for a full month. They paid pretty much everything for him, but the clause for a companion only gave me $800 which I blew thru in just a couple of days.

  • Like British, I use Squaremouth to compare policies and coverage. For my trips in the last 2 years I have chosen Seven Corners. I'm not concerned about reimbursement for the cost of a cancelled or delayed trip but medical expenses can be very costly. Additionally I purchase a yearly policy from Medjet to provide medical transport back home to the US if the doctor gives approval that I am stable enough to travel. Fortunately I've never filed a claim.
