Picaridin vs DEET

Does anyone have any experience using an insect repellent with Picaridin rather than DEET in K&T? It sounds a bit more pleasant to use and the CDC seems to say it is equally as effective.

  • Marc - Just curious... I know your name is not uncommon, but are you in S. Jersey?
  • For many years on various trips I used a DEET based product. It worked effectively, but I always found it unpleasant to use. Last year on Tauck's trip to South Africa and Zimbabwe I switched to a Picaridin based spray. It was far more pleasant to use and worked effectively. I received no mosquito bites.
  • I always use DEET. The one I always get is From REI- Jungle Juice- spray, it works great.
  • On a recent trip to S. Africa and Zimbabwe, we sprayed two sets of safari clothes with Sawyer Permethrin. For exposed skin we used 3M Ultrathon lotion DEET 34%, and around our head and neck we found that Natrapel wipes Picardin 20% were very handy. No bites over 4 days in Kruger National Park or at Victoria Falls.
