  • What is the name of this and where is it located?

  • One of its monikers is the Alcazar of Cordoba which answers both questions.

  • BKMD - Close but not quite correct.

    Archangel Saint Rafael Statue, Cordoba.

In truth, I needed BKMD's close call above. I had been searching for Archangel Michael statues...

  • Portolan is correct, with an assist from BKMD. This statue is in the middle of the Roman Bridge and was sculpted by Bernabe Gomez del Rio during the 17th century. This image of Saint Raphael the Archangel is one of several around Cordoba. Today, Cordoba is still home to many notable pieces of Moorish architecture such as the Mezquita-Catedral, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and is now a Cathedral. The UNESCO status has since been expanded to encompass the whole historic center of Cordoba. Much of this architecture, such as the Alcazar and the Roman bridge has been reworked or reconstructed by the city's successive inhabitants.

Cordoba has the highest summer temperatures in Spain and Europe, with average high temperatures around 99 degrees Fahrenheit in July and August. I visited in May.

  • And surprising, Rafael is NOT the patron saint of Córdoba!

In retrospect, I shouldn't have had to research this as I found I had a picture of the statue (circled in red...never got closer):

  • The Roman bridge is pretty cool. The hotel was on the opposite bank from the attractions so we walked across the bridge a couple of times in both daylight and evening. Here are a couple of shots at dusk.
