The area is extremely rocky and has many tunnels and revetments and the site of some of the most horrendous fighting in WWI with high death counts on both German (Austro-Hungarian) and Italian sides (over 10,000 on the Italian side) due to wounds, hunger and cold- many died of extreme cold alone. Submitted by JohnS. Roman amphitheater in Airles, France. Today, it draws large crowds for bullfighting during the Feria d'Arles as well as plays and concerts in summer, but with the fall of the Western Empire in the 5th century, the amphitheatre became a shelter for the population and was transformed into a fortress with four towers more than 200 houses, and two chapels. The residential role continued until the late 18th century. Vincent Van Gogh spent more than fourteen months in Arles, where he created a multitude of paintings and drawings, many of which are nowadays seen as highlights of late 19th century art. This is also where he cut off his ear!

What and where is this?
Mount Victoria lookout, Wellington New Zealand?
Actually the Richard Byrd Memorial located where JohnS says.
Correct. My notes from the trip say that it is entitled "Due South" but officially it's called the New Zealand National Memorial to Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. It is designed to represent the polar tent that he used on his expeditions to Antarctica.
Are the colors in the pic real or just an odd sun reflection off the surface?
I'd say real, but perhaps a combination. Here it is from three different perspectives.
The colors in my photo are exactly as I took the photo.
