Submitted by KathyM. Italian Dolomites, WWI fortifications, Austro-Hungarian soldier. In the mountains outside Cortina di Ampezzo. The area is extremely rocky and has many tunnels and revetments and the site of some of the most horrendous fighting in WWI with high death counts on both German (Austro-Hungarian) and Italian sides (over 10,000 on the Italian side) due to wounds, hunger and cold- many died of extreme cold alone. The remains of 9,707 Italian soldiers are buried at the nearby shrine.

Submitted by BKMD. The Upsala Glacier, part of the Southern Patagonia Icefield. Name is deceptive because it comes from the old spelling with one p of Uppsala University, which sponsored the first glaciological studies in the area. The University is located in Uppsala, Sweden. Part of the glacier is in disputed territory, as both Chile and Argentina claim it.

Submitted by JohnS. Roman amphitheater in Airles, France. Today, it draws large crowds for bullfighting during the Feria d'Arles as well as plays and concerts in summer, but with the fall of the Western Empire in the 5th century, the amphitheatre became a shelter for the population and was transformed into a fortress with four towers more than 200 houses, and two chapels. The residential role continued until the late 18th century. Vincent Van Gogh spent more than fourteen months in Arles, where he created a multitude of paintings and drawings, many of which are nowadays seen as highlights of late 19th century art. This is also where he cut off his ear!

Here's another challenge for Smiling Sam and his Google Earth prowess, and everyone else, too.
I've developed a tradition of renting a bicycle on my pre-tour day in cities amenable to biking.
This city I consider the most bike friendly city in the world (at least among those I've visited).
Not only are bike lanes ubiquitous, but on busy streets, there are even turn lanes within the bike
lanes with their own traffic signals, including green arrows for turns!
Name the city.
Axel Towers, Copenhagen
The one sign I could read (GENBRUG ER GULD) is Danish for Recycling is gold.
Also looks like the trash can has KBH on it (Copenhagen). Then some Googling.

Yes, Copenhagen, which was my favorite city on the Scandinavia tour. I left the pic relatively underexposed so the signs couldn't be read, but I guess I'm not the only one with an image editor
Regarding biking in Denmark, there are bike trails/lanes throughout the country, not only in the city. Amsterdam is often called the best biking city, but I preferred CPH for biking. There's a bridge over one of the canals in the city, which I biked across, that is in the Guinness Book of records as the most trafficked bike bridge in the world. About 80,000 bikes traverse the bridge daily, primarily commuters to/from work.
BKMD, next time you might consider first opening your photo in Paint or similar program and "erase" signs or other revealing details, like I did to your photo below and with the banner in my photo of the Fenice opera house.
I worked for a Danish Biotech company for 26 years and agree that Denmark is the friendliest biking country, Many of our employees, including our CEO, rode bikes to and from work, some at significant distance. I always loved visiting Denmark.
I haven't been to Denmark, but Amsterdam and the Netherlands might give it a challenge.
