August 10 Trip To Switzerland

Headed out to Switzerland on Aug 10 with Tauck...seems like many of you have done this excursion. Since this is my first time with Tauck and to Switzerland would you offer any advice? I am planning on bringing a suitcase, small wheeled carryon (18"x9"x9") plus a small backpack. I realize the temps can range from 30 to 80 during the tour plus the ice cave is really cold!

Thank you for any advice you can offer to a first timer on Tauck and Switzerland!

  • May sound silly in August but take some gloves and a warm hat for the ice cave along with a pair of shoes with some grip. I was on this trip in 2022 and took warm layers but no gloves. You visit a few places at very high altitude so it can be chilly. We were there in July. Switzerland is so beautiful. Around every corner is another OMG amazing view. For suitcases, my wife and I each had a large checked bag along with a carryon on to ensure we had clothes in case our bags were delayed back in Covid times. We ended up emptying out the carryon and just left it in the bus baggage bay the whole trip so the TD and driver didn’t have to deal with it at every stop. Have fun, it’s a wonderful tour!

  • We are going to Switzerland on Aug 10 also. Appreciate the info on the gloves!

If you're going to the Ice Palace, I recommend some grippers for your shoes. The ice is very slippery and we were not comfortable without any grippers. I make some recommendations for grippers on our blog at https://www.mikeandjudytravel.com/2023-2Switzerland-03.htm#IcePalace

  • We are also going on the August Switzerland trip. Looking forward to meeting everyone
I was wondering how much room there was on the motor coach for carryon bags. About the same as underneath the seats on an airplane

  • The overhead area on the bus is better suited for small items.

  • There may be room at the back of the coach for bags, depending on how big/small the coach and or group are. Overheads on coaches are very small.
Define a carry-on bag….mine is a small backpack, but even that would take up most leg room on some Tauck coaches, the legroom tends to vary depending on the country or even within regions of the same country.

  • If the bag would fit under the seat on a plane it would likely fit in the coach overhead bin with a bit of squeezing. You can't put anything under the seat on the coach. There are foot rests in the way.

Alternatives are the special compartment under the coach for hand carried items ( you're responsible for) or the back of the coach if your group is small. Advantage of the later is you'd have access to it during the day.

  • Ditto on the gloves. I always travel with a pair of light leather gloves (like with a silk liner) and that was plenty. A puffer you can scrunch up, and the usual layers you'll be fine. This is not a dressy tour so don't worry. You'll use your daypack a lot. Sounds like you have it covered.

  • For those that have gone or those planning on attending is it preferred to tip in local currency or US $? Just curious, our group has been debating....Thanks for your thoughts!

  • USD ($), except, obviously, when dining on your own. But a mix of USD and leftover Euros or Swiss Francs is acceptable.
