Using credit cards in the UK

I have not been to the UK since 2018 and am about to leave for England with a large group of American friends. A new member is British and only moved to the US in the last couple of years. She is telling us that credit cards are rarely used in the UK now because of high vendor fees. Instead, people use debit cards, cash cards or Apple Pay. If stores do accept credit cards, they charge for it. Has anyone had any difficulty using credit cards there this year?

  • I was in the UK last year for ESW. No issues with credit cards.

  • Thanks BKMD, I emailed a friend and she says credit cards are widely used

  • I did two weeks in the UK last August (Scotland and England ) and used credit cards for just about every purchase. Certainly every restaurant and hotel charge. No problems!

  • It might be that smaller purchases - inexpensive souvenirs, take out food, etc - might discourage credit cards.
