Food allergies
Has anyone been asked to leave a tour because of their food allergies with Tauck saying getting them medical help would be problematic?

Never heard of it happening. I have been on lots of tours with people who did have food allergies and they were always accommodated though sometimes the options were limited. It's good to let Tauck HQ know so it's in your record and then again talk to the TD (on land tours) or the ship staff (on river cruises). One of the first thing that happens on a river cruise is a time set aside the first afternoon for those who have allergies to meet with someone from the restaurant/kitchen staff to go over the details. Someone like the maitre de or the chef.
The only way I can imagine Tauck not accepting a guest would be if the allergies were so extreme that merely being around a food or it touching anything in the same kitchen causes a life threatening emergency. Depending on your tour, medical care can be easily found or a real challenge.
Claudia is 100% correct.
I have a letter on file with Tauck describing my allergies and foods that I cannot eat, and tell the TD and ship staff of my allergies. I have taken 10 tours with Tauck and have never had a problem.
No, never heard of it.
On our first Africa tour with Tauck in 2007 there was a woman who had celiac disease and I was super impressed that at the first lodge, the chef came over to her and took her to the buffet and showed her exactly was safe for her to eat. He then reappeared with gluten free bread and later, a flourless chocolate cake. That was back before the gluten free phase was a thing here in the US, when some people just choose to eat gluten free, she was born with celiac.
However, the lodges are isolated, so without details, it’s hard to know if Tauck could justify stipulating this. Most people who have serious medical issues on a tour are flown to South Africa. Tour directors do carry EpiPens.
Tauck does a very good job in soliciting input from their guests regarding food allergies. On land tours within the packet of information given, you are asked to list your food allergies. On river tours, the chef will call for a special meeting and will meet privately with guests to understand their concerns. So I have been told.
We, of course, should be stewards of our own health and proactive in communicating allergies, whether food or something else.
Outrageous that they were asked to leave . What kind of allergy ?
I think you are misreading estarae’s post.
They do not say it happened or was them.
I fill out the form with my seafood allergy. A few TDs notice and advise me that a substitution is being made to my meal. Others just ignore it. I always stay vigilant, ask and then refuse a suspect or actual dish that could harm me.
I don’t eat red meat — and after a dozen tours - never had an issue(although some places think that means ‘vegetarian’, but I’m fine with it). Tauck takes good care, even in ‘remote’ places. I had the BEST vegetarian meal in Normandy, and more salads and French fries on my other ‘France’ tours. The greatest meals🙂
So the original poster I think is talking about an African safari tour
Thank you everyone. I too have traveled with someone with severe allergies and never had an issue. Someone did recently though and I was wondering if things had changed. I’m reassured! Not worried about Africa, British, other than the water!
Thanks for getting back to us Estarae! Yes, don’t forget you can’t brush your teeth with the water either. Fill a glass with water, brush your teeth, rinse your mouth with some of the water and then swish your toothbrush around in the water to rinse it clean. Put a washcloth over the cold tap to remind you, I usually use a hair tie to remind me instead.
You are going to have a great time!
