Recommendations of things to see in Oslo

We will be taking the Tauck Norwegian Fjords & Coastal Treasures small ship cruise in June 2025 and will begin in Oslo. As we will have extra days in Oslo does anyone have recommendations of places to see while in Oslo?

  • I did the land tour in 2018. I haven't checked to see what's included on your tour. That said, things of interest included the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Viking Ship Museum, Parliament bldg. I also did a half day guided bicycle tour of the city which I enjoyed.

  • Sadly the Viking Museum is closed for renovation until 2027. The Tauck land tour does include a different museum in the Bygdoy Penisula area - there's several museums there. Also the Vigeland Sculpture park.

  • In addition to the sculpture park which Tauck will probably take you to, the Holmenkollen ski jump makes for a nice excursion. The views from there are breathtaking.

There are many museums, most of which showcase Viking ships.

I have a penchant for food markets and love the Mathallen Market. It is huge and in the city center.

A great day trip is to take a ride on the Flam Railway. It’s an easy train ride from Oslo to get there.

  • The Fram Museum is absolutely amazing! It was one of the highlights of Oslo. It is included in your tour. While in Bergen, if you have a medical background, the leprosy museum is absolutely fascinating. I went there on my own and think it is one of the best preserved pieces of history that I have ever seen.

  • Thanks for all the responses and the information regarding the Viking Museum being closed for renovation until 2027 which is included in our itinerary. I wonder what Tauck will be putting in its place. Some places we are considering visiting while in Oslo include Norwegian Folk Musuem, Akershus Castle & Fortress, Nobel Peace Center, The National Museum – Architecture, Munch Museum, Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology, Norwegian Maritime Museum. if anyone has any thoughts or comments regarding these various attractions is most appreciated. Thanks.

  • We enjoyed the Resistance Museum, which is located at the Fortress.

  • The land tour doesn't specify which museum at the Bygdoy peninsula we'd see. Could be the Fram or the Kon Tiki or something else. I'm watching this thread even closer now after receiving an email overnight from Tauck saying we were not traveling from Copenhagen to Oslo via the overnight ferry. Instead we're flying and spending 2 nights at the Grand hotel in Oslo instead of 1. Some advantages to that although I was sort of looking forward to the ferry. One thing I thought of doing was to use the bike rentals available everywhere to do some riding along the waterfront.

  • Shel- I have not visited all the places on your list, but I do highly recommend the Nobel Peace Center for its historical and humanitarian perspectives. When in Stockholm, the Nobel Prize Museum is also worth the visit, but it is not as powerful as the Peace Center in my opinion.

I have not been to the Edvard Munch Museum’s new building, but I also recommend that. I remember when his famous painting, ‘The Scream,’ was stolen and subsequently recovered.

Please consider posting a review of your trip upon returning home. Enjoy.

  • Our Norwegian Fiords tour says we visit the Fram and the Kontiki museums, but we are done by lunchtime so they must be very quick visits. My husband tells me he was obsessed with Kontiki man when he was at school and built a to scale vessel, or was it a raft. We have booked to see the Royal palace on one of the extra days.

  • All - Thanks for your comments. This is very helpful. I will post reviews of places we decide to visit.

  • Last year I enjoyed The Munch museum, a lovely fjord cruise on the electric catamaran and walking around Akershus. Fram/Kon Tiki we had guided tours of both (they are right across from each other) and a short stop at the ski jump. Fun to watch the zip line but not enough time to do it.
