Canadian Maritimes

We're on the 19 September tour and are wondering about the dress?! We're assuming that it's very casual! do people change for the evenings?
Thanks!!

  • I do not remember changing for the evenings at all except for the welcome and farewell dinners. It is a casual trip and very enjoyable. Have a great time.

  • Very casual. Something nice - slacks, nice top (women) or collared shirt (men) for Welcome and Farewell dinners. Most other dining venues are fairly casual. Unless we were very casually dressed for sightseeing we didn't normally change. Be prepared for weather variations. We got some warm sunny days and days of rain.

  • I'm assuming that we don't need adapters for our electrical plugs?!

  • Hotels in Canada are like in the US. You don't need anything special.

The money is in Canadian dollars and cents. So while you may need to get some Canadian dollars, you can get them at any bank's ATM. An interesting tidbit...Canada eliminated pennies many years ago. If you use a charge card, you will get the actual charge. If you use cash, the price will be rounded up or down. Even if you have pennies left over from prior visits, merchants will not take them!

  • A friend wants to meet us at the waterfront in Halifax. How long and how steep is that walk from the Prince George Hotel?

  • Fairly steep. I can't find a specific gradient but when we walked back up to the Prince George hotel from the waterfront we took it in stages either resting a few times or doing a zigzag like up one block, then walked along a street parallel to the water for one block. Depends on where you start your climb.

Just Google it and go to "Street View" to virtually walk any of the streets highlighted in "blue." It will give you a good idea of the incline which appears to be moderate, but long, in your case. Drag the yellow walking man to where you want to start. You can "walk" on any blue street, turn onto other blue streets, and can stop anywhere enroute for a 360° view of the immediate area.

I do that for any long walks we have planned if Google "Street View" is available. You would be surprised where it is- I used it extensively to plan my hikes to the Monastery and the High Place of Sacrifice in Petra, Jordan!! :D (I wouldn't have wanted to be the guy who had to walk and climb Petra's trails with Google mapping and camera gear mounted to his back! :o )

  • The walk is not long, but it's pretty steep. Claudia's advice to zigzag blocks is good advice. But it's definitely worth spending time on the waterfront, which is beautiful.

  • …and dine at the Bicycle Thief restaurant. It was delicious either for lunch or dinner.

  • Thank you all for the information!!! We just made dinner reservations at the Bicycle Thief for the night we arrive. I assume we'll taxi or Uber there and back??!!

  • Gosh, I don’t remember. We were already on the Waterfront when we discovered that restaurant. We weren’t at the hotel. The best PEI scallops I ever had. I’m sure there’s uber and/or taxi; email or call the hotel and ask. You might even want to go back twice.

  • We took a taxi from the hotel to the Bicycle Thief - it's not a long distance but as others have said, it's a little steep when you walk. I have arthritis in my knees so the taxi made it much easier. I agree - the food is delicious. Enjoy!

  • I was already at the waterfront when I had dinner at the Bicycle Thief and walked up to the hotel after, it is steep by doable.

  • even for people in their mid80s??!!

  • what shape are they in? that's the important factor, not age.

  • Yes, we have traveled with people in their 80’s who are in great shape.

  • onthego I was 81 when I took that tour, it just depends on what shape you are in. I made that walk several times.
