  • Claudia Sails: I agree with you about the Tauck dinners at any if the venue locations no matter how beautiful they may be. Also, I know “when in Rome, do what tbe Romans do” because dining is late for me, in my opinion in Europe. I prefer not to fall aslerp at 19:00 after a very late dinner to have the same eating frenzy repeated the next day. This body can’t handle that. Plus, I don’t thrive on minimum sleep. There are also early departures on excursions on a river cruise, but you’re all settled in your cabin and know the routine by then.

  • My usual sleep time is 6 hours. My husband sleeps 8 to 9. I think it helps that we don’t have to think on tours about when we get up and where we are going. Our biggest problem is trying not to eat all the food and we seem to drink way more than normal on vacations because we don’t have to think about driving.
I think for us we would prefer to do the river cruise last.
We have taken several long tours of late like 20 plus days. Also, being retired and not having to go back to work for us is huge. I once had to do a night shift after just getting off the plane from Japan.

  • We always try to get early dinner times when the TD asks. On the nights we're on our own for meals we look for something light. I really like the food halls in European dept stores. Grab some wine, cheese, a salad, etc. Especially nice if the hotel room has an outside deck to chill on.

  • The beauty of doing a “Star Collector” on Windstar is never having to pack or leave the ship. You book the same room for what is really two cruises. Sleep late, eat late, watch most of the other guests go home, and then enjoy the ship which is for the first half of the day mostly empty. You own it. Services are somewhat limited, and we normally wander into town for a while. Windstar just took formal possession of ‘Star Seeker’, so they are the new proud owners of a brand new ship. I think it carries a whopping two hundred and twenty four guests. Serious yachting. It is about two thirds the size of the Wind Surf. It is actually an expedition ship with an ice reenforced hull.
