What to expect

This is my 1st river cruise and 3rd Tauck tour. I have been on the tour to Egypt and the South African Safari Tour. You did not have to get dressed for any of them. I always bring too many clothes. I was wondering what to bring? Does everyone get dressed at night? We are going the end of September. Also, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nice pants and tops should do it, I've been on 10 river cruises and never felt out of place with what I wore, sometimes I take a dress (not a fancy one).

Some travelers, by choice, like to change out of their touring clothes into something more suitable for dining on board the ship. Each ship has an informal café-type area and a more formal dining room.

My recommendation is to review your tour’s itinerary to determine if off-site “gala” dining events occur. These usually take place in castles, museums, private villas, et al.
You can review the venue on-line then make your attire choices.

A versatile, mix and match wardrobe works best for me while touring; dress slacks, nice tops and/or simple accessorized dresses for dinner.

    Enjoy your first Tauck cruise!

  • Thank you for your prompt answers. It was very helpful. I know we are having dinner in a castle one night so I will dress for that.

  • We were on a Tauck river cruise a couple of years ago and hung out with another couple we met on the cruise. He wore a nice track suit to every meal, including the Captain's Dinner. Nobody cared. A nice guy and a fun couple.

  • Smart casual that is also weather appropriate; layers with a rain jacket etc;We have been on river as well as expedition and ocean cruises; never needed to dress up.Also trying to take only carry on and packing capsule wardrobe works well!Has anyone used Chat GPT to suggest packing for a trip ?I was told if you put in the area of travel and duration, you get wardrobe recommendations!

  • Not just the packing list; The other day, my AI friend gave me specific assessment of tsetse 2026 flood — revised risk summary:

Royal Livingstone: Moderate → High · Mbamba Camp: Negligible → Low · Eagle Island: Negligible → Low · Camp Kalahari: None — unchanged · One&Only: None — unchanged

Practical action: Pack your buff, medium-weight long sleeves and fly whisk specifically for Royal Livingstone (Jun 19–21). The Botswana Delta stops are manageable with standard neutral safari clothing and awareness. The flood is overwhelmingly a spectacular positive for the safari experience — just dress smartly for it.

  • Ginger, the originsal question was about a European river cruise. No worries about tsetse flies.
Your info about tsetse flies is also inaccurate for the areas Tauck visits in Zambia anyway.
    Fly whisk?

  • British, just to clarify — this thread is in General Discussion, not River Cruise, and my post was intended to continue Sudhamli's wonderful question about using AI to help with trip preparation.

On the fly whisk comment — fair point! But I would just give a smile. 😊 We all know AI isn't perfect yet , and our own human intelligence will always be needed.

But my intent here is simple: to show the idea that AI can be a genuinely useful in our travel planning— not just for packing lists, but for so much more.

  • Yes, I use AI. Still, I wonder if people think there are tsetse flies in Europe. ?
