Essence of Japan overnight bag/carry-on 2026

Past posts on this forum regarding overnight bags typically recommend duffel bag for the overnight portion of the essence of Japan trip rather than standard carry-on suitcase. Tauck no longer provides duffel bags for this trip and now specifically recommends a rollaboard carry-on suitcase. Tauck guidelines allow for one suitcase per traveler (ie, tauck will handle/transfer one suitcase), which suggests that travelers must be responsible for their carry-on rollaboard suitcase during the trip.

For portions of the trip that use transportation via motor coach, will Tauck allow carry-on bags to go in the luggage compartment of the bus (overhead bins on motor coaches typically do not accommodate standard carry-on bags)?

For train travel, will standard size (22”) carry-on bags fit in the overhead bins? I am not concerned about lifting a bag into an overhead bin or having to carry a carry-on bag up/down stairs, only wonder whether a regular carry-on bag will fit in the overhead bin.

  • When we took this trip (which was wonderful), Tauck was not recommending or providing duffel bags. Most of the group had rolling carry on bags for the train travel. My husband and I used our carry on back packs. One couple had very large duffel bags and they really struggled with them. The carry on bags fit in the overhead compartment on the trains, although some people kept their bag at their feet.

The rolling carry on bags are too large for the overhead storage on the buses. They were loaded under the bus and taken out upon arrival at the next hotel.

  • Recently returned from this trip, which was wonderful. Lotusgirl is correct regarding carry-on and luggage handling and I appreciated her reply as I prepared for the tour. With the hope a bit of additional information eases other travelers’ minds, here is my experience:

I took a standard carry-on rollaboard (22”, typical maximum size allowed by US airlines), which my wife and I shared as our overnight bag. Some travelers used backpacks, some used other types of carry-on bags or totes. All worked fine. Walking distances with overnight bags were short and never involved stairs, so rollaboards and other overnight bags were equally easy to handle.

Overhead bins on the trains are very spacious, easily accommodate rollaboard suitcases. Overhead bins were nearly empty in every train, in part because legroom is very generous, so most travelers and I kept rollaboards and other overnight bags comfortably at our feet.

Rollaboard suitcases and other large bags that couldn’t be accommodated easily inside motor coaches were transported in the bus luggage compartments. This was never a problem. As the tour progressed and travelers accumulated souvenirs, sometimes requiring the purchase of additional suitcases, Tauck handled the extra luggage without any fuss.

I opted to take a rollaboard carry-on in part for the extra capacity. It was empty on the trip to Japan but, as anticipated, full on the return trip.

Hello everyone, hi Kf , glad to know you like the tour.

One observation that I do have in general... and even though any info. it's appreciated; I wish travelers on this tour would extend further information... than just about the carry-on. (which I know you're helping out, the never-ending luggage inquires)
But even though everyone says the trip was great, wonderful, incredible etc... no one mention... their experience, what they like best, how the tour developed, what about the daily activities, what about the hotels... How was the food choices offer by Tauck's selected restaurants, did they offer setup menus. Did you feel rush during daily activities?
Did Tauck's schedule visits in Tokyo make the travelers feel involve into the culture?
If you were to change something, what would that be?
What about other cities? was one in particular your favorite and why? Any anecdote? How about the Onsen?
Little things that would give a more informative view of this trip.
    Welcome back.
    Thanks .

Mil. I know you know your way around the forum. There have been quite a few detailed reviews of the tour. I know it has changed over the past few years. We did not go with Tauck because I have been three times now and my husband many many times. We looked at the Tauck tour and were not impressed. If you would like to contact me I’ll show you the tour we took. Onsens, all Japanese food. Hike to the Snow monkeys. Small group etcetc
