Local currency In K & T?

edited April 2024 in Kenya & Tanzania

Hi! I’ll be making my first trip to Africa, specifically K & T in July. When in Europe, I use ATMs to get local currency. Is that the best way to get local currency for this trip or should I order some in advance? Any advice on how much?
The posts on visas, luggage and clothing are very helpful. Thanks! I’m so excited!

Bunny: No need for ‘local’ currency. Bring dollars in small denominations, the latest series bills in ‘good’ condition. New bills are not necessary, but bills that are not excessively wrinkled, or have markings, or tears. By the way, Tanzania money is useless in Kenya and there is nothing you can do with it.

    Thanks for the help Sealord.

Agree with SeaLord, the locals love dollars.

Yup, low denomination US currency and plastic is all you need. Some, I believe that includes Sealord, have reportedly (posted a photo?) have been known to iron their money! :)

Yup Alan. I think on our first trip we ironed the money. O Ver Kill. We don’t do that anymore.
