I’ve got a ton of packing cubes but they do not lend themselves very well for shirts, pants or jackets. So I’m going to use the folding method described in a video clip in another thread. In fact I’m doing a practice run today to see how it goes.
We pack shirts and pants very successfully in packing cubes without any creases when unpacked. We roll everything before putting them in the cubes. My husband rarely takes a jacket.
We got 2 sets (4 total) packing cubes yesterday for our upcoming Tuscany & Umbria trip. While we have plenty here at home - these are pretty nice and they are the compression cubes. I actually like the pouch they came in better than the cubes themselves - I will def figure out a way to use it either for shoes or dirty clothes.
A follow up: As I said I’ll do a practice run today using my midsize suitcase. 6 pants, 12 shirts, a bulky cardigan, a bulky sweater, 1 dress jacket, 1 Tilley sailor dressy jacket and only half full at 23lb. The whole procedure was quite fast too. Half full means the other half will be packing cubes with underwear, socks, 2-3 Tshirts, toiletries, etc.
Then my carryon for an emergency complete change of clothes, iPad, camera, small kit of toiletries etc.probably using packing cubes.
It may depend on the itinerary. For Peru and Galapagos we received overnight bags because we could only carry overnight bags on the train to Machu Picchu. In Japan, we had two separate nights where we could only carry overnight bags on the train, and for that trip we received the packing cubes. These were the only tours where we were without our suitcases overnight. We have not received bags or cubes on any of our other trips.
