Sturdy walking shoes

The packing list states comfortable walking shoes without side openings, open toes or mesh sides. Both my hiking boots and trail shoes have mesh tops that extend partly down the sides. Are these shoes acceptable?

  • Nothing like that was specified when we took that tour a while ago. It could be that people are making really stupid choices for the tour….when we went on the K and T and Rwanda gorilla trek, one woman had no suitable shoes with her and the TD had to stop off to take her to the Mall in Nairobi and we all had to wait around for her instead of going to our hotel. The TD was so concerned about poor choices that she emailed the next group of people coming to talk suitable shoes.
On a Galapagos tour we had people with just flip flops for walking over the sharp lava flows.
I would call Tauck and ask. As I recall, you walk on the desert sand and do a rhino walk, otherwise you are in safari vehicles until you get to Cape Town.

  • Kathy, I wore sneakers on this trip the entire time and was perfectly comfortable. No need for special footwear. It is an excellent tour! Have fun..

  • What is the need for sandals? Do they need to be waterproof or are regular sandals ok?

  • The instructions by the first person on this trip says no sandals.

  • Packing list specifies boith walking shoes and sandals- hence my question. Are the sandals solely for the outdoor showers and/or pools? or are they for in camp or in the cities?

  • My husband and I went on this tour in June. Neither of us brought sandals and did not miss them. Perhaps travelers who visit at a hotter time of year would have a different viewpoint.

  • I am at Eagle lodge right now in Botswana. I did not pack sandals. You would not wear sandals at all on a game drive. If you think you need them, they would only be practical for Livingstone or Capetown. I have tried suggest kinds of tennis shoes for this trip and a pair of flip flops for inside our room. One of the tennis shoes does look dressier. That’s all that’s needed for us.

  • I have often seen sandals suggested for daytime at camp between drives--getting to the pool, in the room/tent, and around the camp.

  • I've seen people wearing sandals on cobblestone streets and heels in Versailles.

  • I’m always amazed at the footwear that is worn on tour. I remember many years ago being in Prague on a rainy evening with adorable kitten heels. I slid every which way - my heel got caught in the cobblestones. It was a disaster. I looked what not to wear!

  • I've reached the age that I value comfort over style! But I do like to get out of my Merrills in the hotel at night.
