Sorrento PreTrip Suggestion Request
We are on the Classic Italy Small Group September 8 2024 and are arriving a few days early and staying in Sorrento. Any experienced travelers have any suggestions for spending 3 days before the trip begins?

KathrynP I took this trip quite a time ago but if you get the app Visit a City and look under "sights" it will give you some ideas, I know that some people have gone to the Blue Lagoon? during this trip, maybe others will answer.
I did the large group tour. Itinerary is about the same, as we kept meeting up with a small group tour at various museums, churches, etc. I did the day trip to Capri. Unfortunately, due to sea and weather conditions, we didn't go in the Blue Lagoon (only happens 30% of the time), but travelled around the island by boat, then visited Capri for the day. Worthwhile day trip. Other than that, I don't have any recommendations. Sorrento is a relatively sleepy place.
It appears you may have seen my old post since you asked about which local tour company we used, if not check it out: https://forums.tauck.com/discussion/9112/classic-italy-both-thoughts-and-recommendations#latest (sorry, the site hosting my photos back in those days is not working). I would still recommend Herculaneum, the National Archeological Museum in Naples, and the Colosseum in Pozzuoli, (there is plenty to see in and around Naples- new stuff is being discovered and excavated all the time) and Capri. Tauck now does Capri as an option. I think the Tauck option may be about the same price as Driver in Italy, if so I would go with Driver in Italy. You can customize what you want to see and it is such a treat to have a guide all to yourself. On Capri, you can do the around island boat tour with visit to the Blue Grotto (depends on wind and wave conditions), ride the chairlift to the top of Mt Solara for a beautiful view of the island, Naples Bay, and Vesuvius, visit the church of St Michele Arcangelo which has a beautiful floor decorated with painted majolica tiles.
KathrynP, you may wish to look at the Tauck Naples, Capri and Amalfi Coast tour for ideas. Our friends went on that trip this past spring and loved everything. Also, I always recommend the Rick Steves Italy guidebook because it has lots of information and explanations (always good to double check opening days and times, though.) Lastly, be aware of the nightmare traffic in the area if you decide to travel by car. You might wish to look at the ferry schedule which many people think is the best way to go from Sorrento to Naples. (You would probably still want to use taxis when you get to Naples.)

Enjoy! You will love the trip.
