Lightweight folding stool
For our upcoming tour in a few weeks, we received an email from our tour director, who has said that a light-weight folding stool is nice, but not essential, to have when we stop for explanations on "artefacts/temples," because there are seldom benches. Did any one you have been on this tour, take a folding stool with you? Do you recommend doing this?

We're both old as dirt and didn't take anything nor have any problems. If someone has physical issues with standing for a short while I think it would be a good idea. But if you don't have issues, I wouldn't recommend it. It becomes something more to carry.
I’ve only been to Jordan and Petra is generally a lot of walking but I guess Egypt might be different. The only time I have seen someone on a tour with one of those folding walking stick/seats was a member of the Tauck family! If you are fine standing for a while, I would not take one. Going at one of the cooler times of year would also be less tiring than going in the heat when standing around can be more tedious. I think I’ve never had a tour director contact me before a tour, perhaps this one is getting more people than usual who are not really fit enough for the challenges of this tour.
In many places there are rocks, stone blocks, etc. to sit on. With the Whispers, you don't need to be up close to the TD. Some places have tons of steps (temples) or seats (amphitheater) like Jerash:
Short walls for people and cats like here in Petra, and Kiosk of Trajan at Philea Temple on Agilkia Island in Aswan:
Even the possibility of a random folding chair as at the Temple of Horus
You get the idea. Now how long you will have to rest is up to you and whether you want to stay with the local guide. If you plan to use a camera or phone to take photos, carrying a folding chair could be awkward.
Agree with Mike and Alan. Not needed unless as Mike says standing for a short while is an issue.
Then again, since the TD recommended it, perhaps you can talk them into carrying it. In that case go for it. 😂
