Classic Italy vs Lake Como to Rome

Planning a trip for September 2026 and trying to choose between Classic Italy or Lake Como to Rome. Does anyone have insights or experiences with either itinerary? Both look amazing, and since it will be our first trip to Italy, it’s hard to imagine going wrong with either one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • My thought would be to take the Classic Italy tour first since it will give you an overview of the country. That was our very first European tour although it probably had a different name.

Should you like that tour, you can then explore the northern region and return to Rome in the future.

No matter which one you choose, have a great time!

  • I took the Classic Italy tour, it was amazing, one of my favorites.

  • Classic Italy is great for first timers.

  • I did Classic Italy a few years ago. It was a great trip. My only complaint is with Tauck's "cheapening" of the tours since Covid, substituting free time for site visits with a local guide. For example, in Rome, you're on your own to see the Coliseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, etc.

  • I did the Lake Como to Rome trip 11 years ago, and we were on our own for all of those sites mentioned by BKMD except the Coliseum. (I loved the Pantheon, but the Trevi Fountain was drained and behind a chain link fence for repairs.)

  • Each tour is different. Just did the Rome, Amalfi, Sicily, Malta Tour and Tauck took us to Colosseum, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and the Forum via walking tours. You got bussed past a few other sights on the way to/from the above. All of the other famous sights in Rome would have to be on your own. In a previous tour I had seen most of those - the Vatican, St. Peters Square, etc.
