Hello, if I were you, I would wait a couple of months...save the money and pay your single supplement... it may be a lot but better than having to share a room with these particular ladies, just think ... you will be stock with someone you don't know and that most likely will not compromise with you on the way she likes things done and if there is an disagreement ,she will have a long face and bad attitude all the time, to say the least.
You will end up wasting a lot more money at the end and will come back unhappy.
I thought about it once and thanks god it did not happen! the woman was a nightmare.
Now, I don't only not share rooms; but I also do my independent activities while still on tour. I hire private guides during the tour.
I do skip a day here and there, to do what interest me the most if it's not an included activity.
When I did this tour, I went water rafting on the 2nd day at the Four Seasons and also went on a tour set by the hotel with a private guide and driver - they took me to some amazing rice fields and also to a famous water temple, plus more.
Just remember you're not married to the tour group and as long as you tell the TD and you are ready when it comes time to departure
they don't care.
Enjoy the trip as you would like it to be.
Money it's just money- the experience and knowledge it's what counts. I have done 12 tours with Tauck and also have travel independent for many years, for some this is difficult, but I love it and enjoy my time on my own. There is a large population of single ladies traveling independent...
you meet t incredible people and see lots of amazing local sights.
On my next trip- location not to be disclose here... but it is a Tauck tour again, I have hired 2 private guides, 1 for 2 days prior to the tour, since they don't see much of the first city- (Capital city) and the other also for 2 days at the end... the final stop and (most interesting city) - for me as a photographer and cultural enthusiast.
On this tour, I'm skipping only 1 Tauck -day in the middle... It's a 1/2 day activity day and then back to the hotel.
What I do ALWAYS recommend, it's do your HOMEWORK! Singapore it's an amazing city and there is lots of things to do and see.
the rest of the trip it's well plan and full of activities- it's a great tour.
If you need any suggestion or info.- use the private mess.
We recently did a trip with two women who were ‘friends’ and two days into the trip they were never seen together. I have no idea how things went in the stateroom, but they never ate together or hung out together. If you can’t afford to go as a single, don’t go with a stranger or a sort of friend. I have been on one trip where the boy friend and the girl friend discovered that they hated each other. That was not good for them nor anyone else in the group.
We have also been on a tour where friends fell out and it wasn’t fun for them or the rest of us. First world problems
I agree 100%. Pay the single supplement. Some people do not know how to play well with others.
On our Rick Steves tours they would pair single travelers who did not want to pay the single supplement. This happened a lot as Rick Steves travelers are frugal. We witnessed several disasters when this fell apart and the tour guide scrambled to make things right. Two I recall: one was a snoring issue and the other was a woman who monopolized the bathroom including hanging hand washables on every conceivable knob and rack. We often travel with our adult daughter and would never consider pairing her with a stranger. It’s a lottery with potentially many bad outcomes.
Lol!
I travel solo and yes the single supplement is expensive but I would never consider rooming with a stranger or even a friend, it doesn't matter how well you know someone is very different having to be 24/7 with them.
lol!
It’s a delicate issue. I have friends we have cruised with ten times and we get along great. But, I have other friends or relatives that are off the list. We had one recent widow friend that I had set up perfectly in a Cat One no supplement situation and she decided to get a ‘friend’ to go with her but wanted a bigger room which they got, and then the ‘friend’ backed out. So much for the no single supplement. So much for the insurance. People need to pay attention to the people who know what they are doing. You start pairing up with ‘friends’ or strangers, and let the buyer beware. Going solo is often the better option.
SeaLord, that reminds me of the time friends invited themselves on a Tauck tour with us, their first. They changed their minds and cancelled, first without telling us. The first we knew was an email from Tauck saying how sorry they were we had cancelled. Their booking was linked with ours, even though we had specifically told Tauck not to do that because they often cancel events. The tour was full, we just got back to Tauck in time to get our booking back, we had booked it 18 months in advance too.
Don't you mean former friends?
We had a dog sitter change her mind about staying with our dog after committing to the dates and my booking airline tickets. She had stayed with the dog before but decided the dog was just too young and energetic for her. Did say when the dog got older she'd consider staying with her. Needless to say I tossed her phone number.
Also once planned to meet up with friends in another state in combination with a family visit. They backed out after the flights were booked because their son was buying a house and needed their help to move. Thankfully we were able to stay longer with family because changing the ticket dates was going to be expensive.
I get a true emergency - illness, death in the family, whatever - but just changing your mind - nope. (And yes, more or less former friends)
Traveling with good friends has advantages and disadvantages. High j the boundaries or sometimes should be discussed first. It is everyone’s vacation. Questions line do you do everything together including dining and excisions or can you do what you want and meet up for drinks and dinner. Sometimes I have gone on excursions that do not interest my husband or friends. I find I have alot to share when I return from the day and they do as well.
A couple of years ago we went on the Rocky Mountaineer on our own with neighbors who do not travel. It was an eye opener for me going with inexperienced travelers and what they packed for a week. Plus, I do not want to split a bill if friends purchase a 165.00 bottle of wine and I don drink it at that meal. Think we all have good stories.
My gosh I just remembered I had booked a tour to Northern Spain with Tauck and my best friend and her husband also booked it. One day she called me and asked if I would please room with her cousin as she could not afford the single supplement.
Very reluctantly I agreed and what a disaster it was, the first night she completely undressed, I'm not a prude but would never do something like that even if I knew the person, she snored like a stevedore, told me I could come in the bathroom any time she was there, to which I told her that I would not and to please do not come in the bathroom while I was there (made sure I locked the door).
Then she got sick all over the bathroom and did not bother to clean it up, I was so embarrassed, told my friend that doing her a favor had ruined my trip.
That’s the worse story yet Gladys. However, I notice LACheddar has not been back to the forum since she posted the question. Perhaps just as well😀
What a horrible experience to be forced to endure! I would have told my “friend” to get a cot in her room for her cousin. But I understand that would have also put you in an uncomfortable position.
It has been about 10 days since I asked the Tauck community for a roomate. Thank you all so much for your replies. I had no idea I would get so many wonderful responses. All of the opinions are the same...I will pay for a single supplement when I decide to go on the trip vs risk it. Happy New Year to all!
