Layover in Amsterdam

Is a 2 hours and 45 minutes layover enough time to transfer from one plane to another in Amsterdam when traveling from the US to Budapest?

  • It's a large airport so you could have a long walk. If you feel comfortable with possibly a long airport walk then you should be fine.

We transfer in AMS often - it is huge, but we find it more organized & efficient than CDG & other options, so we typically look for flights that do transfer in AMS. We usually have about 2 hrs or a little less, so I think 2hrs & 45min will be ample time for you.

  • Schiphol is one of the most efficient airports I have navigated. Unless delayed, you should have no problem. The signage is also quite good. I recommend studying its layout before you land so you know where to catch your next plane.

  • Plenty of time. It could be a bit of a walk depending on gates but you can arrange help if needed. Passport control uses automated systems now. The last few times I went through it was very quick. Because its all one terminal you shouldn't have to go through any security screening which can happen at DeGalle.

  • Check out the tube video about transferring. Easy Peasy

  • Know the airport layout ahead of time and be in strutting mode as soon as you deplane. We did it US to Prague in just under an hour (our plane arrived in AMS late)!! Our bags took a few hours longer to get there. 😂 😂

  • Yes, Amsterdam does not have the best reliability in getting bags onto a connecting flight even if you yourself manage to charge through the airport and make the flight 😟

  • Update- you may remember the kidney stone saga that eventually resulted in the loss of my right kidney last year, well. . . Since Friday I’ve been back in at least two hospitals getting ready to donate a gall stone and my gallbladder to biowaste. I had bad stomach pains almost two weeks ago then again last Friday. Initially, they couldn’t figure out why- stone hid from CT and ER docs were too busy dealing with mobbed ER. Luckily they did a last minute MRI which found that little Pearl. Two nearest (network) hospitals had no rooms at the inn, so I’m in a hosp 45 miles away. So far things are going well. Unless there is a scheduling problem (too many surgical patients, not enough docs) I could be home as early as tomorrow afternoon.

  • Get well and feel better Alan.

  • @AlanS - Wow, that's not great news. I hope everything goes well for you and you're home and healthy soon.

  • Alan: Wishing you well!! 🙏
