Adapters

Going on Blue Danube on Savor, with hotel nights in Budapest and Prague. What type of adapters are necessary for ship and hotels? I have dual voltage hair dryer and flat iron, so I;m sure they will be fine without one?
For I pads and new I phones= what type of prong adapter will I need for boat and hotels?

  • Std. Euro adapter.

Be aware some ships prohibit passengers from bring their own hair dryers and curling irons because of fire danger risk.

  • MS Joy (Rhine) and MS Savor (Danube), Cat 3 Cabin, electrical outlets.

Note: most locations have a US 110 volt outlet (labeled) plus a Euro 220 volt outlet. For more flexibility, especially if you have multiple devices, I recommend two styles of adapter and a small power strip (but get one of the newer strips that has both styles of 5.2 volt ports- USB-A and USB-C then you won't need a charger module.) Remember if you use a US, 110 volt power strip with an adapter to plug it into a 220 volt wall receptacle all outlets on the strip will now be 220 volt!

Vox storage and charging shelf by the door:

There is an outlet behind the Nespresso machine.

    Bathroom medicine cabinet:

Small, multi-outlet strip (4 outlets) and adapters:

  • A word of warning on the power strips:
Many available on Amazon are not UL/CE approved and are vague whether they work on both 120 and 240V (for USB). For example, the description on amazon says 240 compatible, but when it arrives, it's labelled 120. I speak from personal experience. I bought a few from amazon and wound up returning them due to labelling/certification misinformation.

  • The hotel and ship will both have hair dryers. Check with the ship's staff about using any heated appliances on board. They may veto your flat iron for safety reasons.

This is just my personal preference, but I use power adapters that give you the ability to plug two 120 volt plugs into them. Someting like this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079RT8JVC?th=1

I always carry a few USB type chargers with me, ones that have two USB-C outlets. I always carry backups because if you have a failure, it's inconvenient to buy a replacement. [Update: I put two pictures of the USB chargers I use at the end of this post. Note that the plug folds into the charger to make a smaller package. They are 2.25 inches square by 1 inch thick.]

I also carry a bunch of cable adapters, such that I can plug the USB-C cables into a USB-A outlet, and a few other adapters just in case a friend needs one, such as an adapter to a Lighting plug or a USB-A mini.

I also carry a universal adapter like this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CBF376VD
This one has the advantage of adapting to a wide variety of outlets, and it provides USB power - but it's physically larger.

I used to carry a power strip but found that I never used it with the other devices I carry so I started leaving it home. I put two pictures of the power strip at the end of this text. The strip folds up nicely and has three outlets - two on the side you can see and one on the back. The cord is very short to allow it to fold around the strip.

Again, this is just me, but for a vanilla power strip (no USB) I never worried about plugging it into a 230 volt outlet even if it was rated for 120 volts. The amount of insulation on wires for 120 volts is very sufficient for 230 volts.

  • MIke - Do you still have room for clothes with all those adapters? Maybe that explains the shower pic in your blog (India, IIRC) :)

  • They're not very big and I carry one in my checked bag and one in my carry-on. Just to not have everything in one place where I'd lose it all if one bag was missing. Belt and suspenders.

  • Much better ones around these days.

  • Much better ones around these days.

    Such as?

  • Look on Amazon

  • I haven. There are hundreds. Can you narrow down the search and explain what makes it better, in your opinion?

  • Not right now, I’m on vacation and I don’t open my Amazon account when I’m out of the country

  • For my husband and I we don't have that many items to charge - cell phones and Kindles mostly. We don't need extension cords. If you're someone with a laptop, tablet, camera equipment, etc your needs may be different. Having inadvertently abandoned an adapter on one tour we now split up the resources with multiple simple adapters each. One set has 2 USB ports and a built in nightlight which is handy in unfamiliar hotel rooms. The other has a standard US outlet that I can use my fast charge plug in.
